The Finnish Cultural Foundation is promoting the use of new and innovative practices in museum exhibition design with the Museum Vision Project, the purpose of which is to increase the number of museum visitors and to enhance visitor experience. In this two phased application process museums are eligible for grants up to hundreds of thousands of euros for their redesign projects.

The Museum Vision grants were awarded to ten museums all over Finland. All together 3 million euros was aimed to support the redesign projects of the museums. The second phase of grants were awarded in 2019 and the grants can be used in years 2020 to 2023.

The Museum Vision grants aren't currently open for applications.

Who may apply

All professionally run museums operating in Finland are eligible for the grant. The application is primarily directed towards medium-sized museums with sufficient personnel to implement redesign projects. It is also possible to apply for a grant for a joint venture together with other museums.

The redesign project should aim to improve visitor experience and to attract new visitors. These aims can be achieved through innovations in presentation technology, functionality, or other technology in the exhibition space, investing in audience development, or focusing on certain target groups. Museums may also focus on brand or marketing strategy development in their redesign projects.

The application process has two phases. The grants of the first phase may be used for redesign project planning on the second phase. These initial grants range from 5.000 to 20.000 euros. The application period for grants in the second phase is in August 2019. These grants range from 100.000 to 300.000 euros and are meant for implementing the redesign project plans during 2020–2022.
