Narva Art Residency (NART) was founded in 2015. It facilitates residencies, art exhibitions, talks and educational workshops, and at times, NART hosts student groups and also Ukrainian refugees. Thus, it is a vibrant centre for culture and arts. The residency is located in the historical Kreenholm district, close by to a former textile manufacture site at a historic Neo-Gothic villa, which was originally built for the director of the factory.
At NART, artists are invited to make interactive, socially-engaged, and/or community-based projects. The thematic focus points may additionally arise from the area’s characteristics, known in Estonia for being a home to a majority Russian-speaking community, its post-industrial heritage, its notion of a border area, and its transitional era to a low-carbon economy. NART acts as a platform for dialogue and integration via arts, culture and education. The residency application working plan should outline how the applicant plans to connect with the local community.
For the artists-in-residence, NART provides private accommodation, shared working facilities as well as support for the artist’s research and exploring the Ida-Virumaa area. The spaces available for the artists-in-residence comprise of connected exhibition halls and shared studios of up to 1,000 m2 and a cinema hall with over 100 seats. The working spaces are located adjacent to the living quarters. Accommodation will be communal in nature with a shared kitchen and bathrooms. NART has modest technical facilities so the residents are encouraged to bring with them what they need for their artistic process.
Artistic duos may apply for the grant as a working group (with one application). Both members of the partnership are provided with separate working grants.
