Solar is a non-profit cultural institution that, since 2015, has supported, nurtured, and expanded experimental practices in art and education.

Grounded in the principles of freedom and social transformation, Solar works to democratize access to art and education as drivers of knowledge, rights, and innovation through a diverse, free public program that includes group and solo exhibitions, the commissioning of new works, artistic residencies, and educational public programs.

Located in Rio de Janeiro’s historic center, the headquarters serves as an open cultural hub for all, showcasing some of the most vital practices in Brazilian and Global South art, while contributing to the area’s cultural and economic revitalization and building bridges to the world.

The residency programme hosts eight artists, who have access to an individual studio space within a shared working area at Solar’s headquarters, available during working hours (Tue-Sat 10AM-6PM). They will be accommodated in private room in an apartment shared with other artists, located near Solar’s headquarters.

The residency programme features monthly visits to the studios of established artists and to partner institutions; curatorial support from the internal team and invited curators; and a final open studio to share the processes developed during the residency. The programme is aimed at early-career artists, but also other artists, researchers, and practitioners working at the intersection of art and education may apply.

As a way of engaging Solar’s community in this collective learning process, the participating artists are expected to offer one educational workshop or public program (such as performance, screening, lecture) at the institution headquarters, partner institutions, or public schools.

Oficina Solar offers participants the opportunity to engage with the Solar community, partner institutions, and Rio’s art ecosystem as a whole through workshops and public programs developed both for and by the residents.
