Triangle, New York
Triangle is a visual arts residency in New York founded in 1982, and located in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Triangle offers spacious studios and a dynamic artistic community to support the development of new artwork. Triangle’s founding concept and current programs de-emphasize professionalization and specific outcomes, instead allowing artists space and time to focus on their ideas and process.
You may apply for:
- two working grants for three months for visual artists
- working period: July 2nd to September 30th and October 2nd to December 31st
- the working grant amounts to €8,000 per three-month residency

The Triangle residency focuses on building community. Residency gatherings between artists and staff and visits from curators occur several times a month. There is also a seasonal open studio. Interested applicants should be enthusiastic about participating in these meetings and events. In addition, applicants should demonstrate that they can manage their time to work productively during the residency, and can set aside significant time each week to be in the studio.
The residency artists have 24-access to the working space. The residency offers basic communal tools such as hammers and drills. There are no workshops such as wood shops or metal shops on site.
The mission of Triangle is to provide a transformative working environment for committed artists through studio-based opportunities to experiment and create new work; create a shared community with other artists; introduction of curators and other experts to the work at crucial times; cultivation of new and diverse audiences with public programs, such as open studios; and meaningful exposure to and interaction with the surrounding Brooklyn community and the wider world.
The Finnish Cultural Foundation provides an apartment for the resident’s use. The one-bedroom apartment is maintained by the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York, and located separately from the Triangle residency space, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It is possible to bring along family members, within the limitations of the apartment. Travel expenses for family members are covered by the grantee themselves.
