n 1981 the singer, professor Mirjam
Helin (1911–2006) gave a donation
that established the Mirjam and Hans
Helin Fund within the Finnish Cultural
Foundation. The fund promotes the art
of singing and other types of music, and
the income from the fund is used to hold
the Mirjam Helin International Singing
Competition every five years.
APPLICATIONS
for  the 2014 competition
were received from326 singers all over the
world, fromwhich 63were chosen to enter
for the competition. The preliminary round
was held at the Sibelius Academy and the
Semifinals and Final at the Helsinki Music
Centre. The finalists were accompanied by
The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra
conducted by Hannu Lintu. They also
performed at the prizewinners´concert
with the Tampere Filharmonic Orchestra.
